Proofreading and Copy Editing Services.

What’s the difference between Proofreading and Copy Editing?

According to proofreading is defined as ‘When the material is nearly a finished product, meaning it has been edited, laid out, and designed, the proofreader searches for typographical errors. The proofreader works with a facsimile of a finished product, or a proof (hence the term proofreading). Proofreaders don’t suggest major changes to the text; rather, they look for minor text and formatting errors and confirm the material is ready for publication.

Copy editing on the other hand is defined as ‘The tasks involved in copy editing include checking written material for grammar, spelling, style, and punctuation issues before it’s prepared for proofreading. A copy editor may also do a rewrite, if necessary, to fix any problems with transitions, wordiness, jargon, and to ensure the style of the piece fits with the publication. This work is known as revision.

What I do.

This is a basic service and will only cover spelling, basic grammar and typing mistakes. Typing mistakes covers punctuation, missing words, wrong words etc. No suggestions will be offered on sentence structure, nor will I move text around.  This service is for those that have self edited, and where only a minor check is needed. It is not for first drafts of work where no editing has been performed.
If your work requires more than this, then it is strongly recommended that you use the Copy Edit/Proofread Combined Service.

Copy Edit Service

If the text requires more than a basic proofread, or has not yet had any editing, then a combined copy edit/proofread will apply.
This is a more comprehensive edit. In addition to the above, I will also look at sentence structure as a whole which includes word choice, repeated words in a sentence or paragraph, and removal of unnecessary words. I will also move text around to help with readability, and offer suggestions and improvements.
I will use track changes to mark up any amendments that are required, which still gives you final control. You can either accept or reject my changes and suggestions.

What do I charge?

The minimum cost is $20.00.

For any work $100 or under, I require payment upfront.

For any work over $100 I require a 50% deposit, with the remainder to be paid before the changes will be sent.

All charges are in Australian dollars.
